Project Outback | Exploring facial rigging techniques in KineFX/APEX
DescriptionIn this presentation, we will be introducing Project Outback as a context in which to explore Houdini's rigging and animation framework: KineFX (powered by APEX).
We will start by briefly recalling what are KineFX and APEX and what was achieved during the first phase of Project Outback.
For the second phase of our APEX exploration, we will be focusing on facial rigging. We will explain the difference between a facial rig built for a realistic character and one built for a stylised/cartoon character.
We will then continue our discussion by examining some facial rigging techniques and how they can be implemented in KineFX.
Some of the techniques that will be covered include:
- slider creation
- types
- xform components
- limits
- normalizing
- control groups
- blendshapes
- generating from operators
- mirroring
- symmetrizing
- splitting
- refining (sculpting)
- fixing interpolation path with inbetweens
- optimizing
- APEX graph building
- skeleton blendshaping
- lattices and weight maps
- custom deformation operators
- rivets
- layered bone deforms
- deltamush
Finally, we will close the discussion by providing some path to be explored and some tips and tricks to keep in mind.
