Open Access to all SIGGRAPH Papers and Other ACM-for-All Goals
DescriptionWhat will the impact of your SIGGRAPH papers be when they are all offered openly to the world? How much more will they be cited? How many of your research results will be reproduced when the related software and datasets are openly available? In the past few months, the ACM Council has reaffirmed thrice its intention to open access to all ACM publications and related research artifacts in the ACM Digital Library after 1-1-2026.
True to its mission, which calls for "fostering the open exchange of information", ACM demonstrates its commitment to democratization of knowledge, transparency, and accountability. Having the researcher-author in mind while aiming to achieve sustainability of the Digital Library, ACM has introduced ACM Open. It is an innovative open publishing model that allows (clusters of) institutions or even whole countries to pay a lump sum for papers published by authors affiliated with them, instead of authors paying individually per paper.
This session will explain the details of ACM Open and the changes it brings to publishing and disseminating research results through the ACM DL and answer any questions about it. It will cast this in the general context of Open Science, a new paradigm for navigating the entire research lifecycle in all sciences, which ACM intends to help our community to explore. This session will also highlight some other strategic ACM initiatives aiming at improving the environment of computing scientists and professionals as well as the general public in an ever-changing world.
