Biography
Professor Al Bovik (HonFRPS) holds the Ernest J. Cockrell Family Endowed Chair in Engineering, as well as the Cockrell Family Dean’s Chair for Engineering Excellence, at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and The Institute for Neurosciences, and Director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE).

He is well known for many contributions to the fields of digital television, image and video processing, computational vision, and modeling of visual perception. He is the recipient of the John Fritz Medal, the IEEE Edison Medal, a Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development fromThe Television Academy, the Progress Medal from The Royal Photographic Society, the IEEE Fourier Award, and the Edwin H. Alan Medal from Optica.

Professor Bovik is an elected member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, an elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, an elected Fellow of the United States National Academy of Inventors, an elected member of Academia Europaea, and a member of both The Television Academy (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). He is an inaugural member of the Science and Technology Peer Group of The Television Academy.
