SUMMARY:Spread Your Wings: Demonstrating a Soft Floating Robotic Avatar wi
th Flapping Wings for Novel Physical Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Mingyang Xu and Yulan Ju (Keio University Graduate School of M
edia Design); Qing Zhang (The University of Tokyo); Christopher Changmok K
im and Qingyuan Gao (Keio University Graduate School of Media Design); Yun
Suen Pai (University of Auckland); Giulia Barbareschi (Keio University Gr
aduate School of Media Design); Matthias Hoppe (Keio University Graduate S
chool of Media Design, JSPS International Research Fellow); and Kai Kunze
and Kouta Minamizawa (Keio University Graduate School of Media Design)\n\n
We demonstrate a robotic avatar concept in which pilots can embody a fish-
like form, “swimming” through indoor spaces to interact with others remote
ly. By mimicking the flapping flight of birds, pilots can control the avat
ar through body movements. This work opens new opportunities for teleprese
 nce with a wing-based approach.\n\nInterest Area: Arts & Design, Gaming &
