SUMMARY:12. Beyond Automation: Fostering Agency Between Humans, Algorithms
, and Machines in Computational Design for Digital Fabrication
DESCRIPTION:Cody Tucker (TURF Design)\n\nThis project explores the role of
the designer in digital fabrication workflows as digitization leads to hi
gher levels of design automation. As digital technologies are adopted to s
treamline design to manufacturing workflows, elements of the creative proc
ess can become standardized to improve production efficiency at the cost o
f designer autonomy and product customization. In order to ensure designer
s’ agency and increase product variation, the Carrara project presents a c
ollaborative tool utilizing agent-based modeling (ABM) to represent design
ers, fabrication machines, and algorithms as active co-participants in the
design process. This co-participatory workflow enables a generative, scal
able product line that takes advantage of digital efficiencies while provi
ding the designer with autonomy and control in the creative process.\n\nRe
